Dean Russell Mertens Marry To Keleigh Kristen Elizabeth Beck

Miss Keleigh Kristen Elizabeth Beck and Dean Russell Mertens were united in marriage on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 6 o’clock in the evening at Rayne Methodist Church, St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, La.

Rayne Methodist was built in 1875, and featured on the PBS documentary which highlighted historic sanctuaries.

The Rev. Callie Winn Crawford of New Orleans officiated the double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beck of Beeville. She is the grand daughter of Mrs. Elline Schmidt of Kenedy and the late Monroe Schmidt, and Mr. and Mrs. Roland Beck Sr. of Normanna.

The groom is the son of Ms. Sandra Mertens and Mr. Kevin Mertens of Houston, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Smith of Abilene and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Mertens of Galveston.

Miss Kristin Foteh of Houston read from the Song of Solomon. Music for the ceremony was provided by organist Dr. Joel Beington and accompanied by Allison Darnell on the violin. The beautifully decorated church contained a large alter arrangement of white hydrangeas, roses, garden roses, ranunculus, amaranthus, dendrobium orchids, lemon leaf greenery and accent flowers. The aisle markers were comprised of hydrangeas and dendrobium orchids suspended from ivory satin ribbons.

The bride’s attendants wore ivory and champagne one-shouldered, full-length dresses. Their bouquets coordinated with that of the bride, being designed with small, hand-tied bouquets of white hydrangeas, blush garden roses, blush tea roses and blush ranunculus.

Lorin Foteh of Houston served as maid of honor while the matron of honor was Toni Howell Beck of Beeville, sister-in-law of the bride. The honored attendant was Georgia Latcham of Beeville and Austin.

Serving as flower girls were Miss McKynna Beck and Miss Kailey McCray of Portland, cousins of the bride, and Miss Piper Beck of Beeville, niece of the bride.

Attending the groom as best man was Army Specialist Treman Barnes of Columbus, Ga. Groomsmen were Roland H. Beck III “Tres” Beck, of Beeville, brother of the bride, and Walker McDaniel of Houston. Serving as ushers were Ronald J. Beck II and Ryan Beck, cousins of the bride, of Normanna and Ethan Smith of Abilene, cousin of the groom.

Given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father, the bride wore a Kenneth Poole couture gown. The Royal Duchess satin, strapless gown had an asymmetrically ruched bodice and bustled skirt. The silver jeweled appliqued accents were on the empire and side sash. It was artfully draped and trimmed with Swarovski crystals and pearls.

To complement her gown, Keleigh wore a cascading beaded veil and carried a classic bouquet of white hydrangeas, blush garden roses, blush tea roses and blush ranunculus. She also was adorned with a pearl and diamond dove brooch which belongs to her grandmother, Mrs. Grace Beck of Normanna. This brooch has been worn by all of the previous brides in her family.

Immediately following the ceremony, guests were taken by police-escorted buses to Bourbon Street, where they were participants in the “second line” parade tradition of New Orleans. “When the Saints Go Marching In” was being played while guests were asked to wave their “napkins” joyously in the air to celebrate the new marriage.

Following the second line, the parents of the bride hosted an elegant reception, which was held at LaTrobe on Royal. LaTrobe, the original bank of Louisiana, was built in 1822. Guests enjoyed a traditional New Orleans-style buffet of various items. Barbecue shrimp and grits, crayfish etouffee, fried turkey, prime rib roast, pecan crusted oysters and gumbo were just a few of the items enjoyed by the guests. A pastry chef “rolled” truffles for everyone at their request.

A five-tiered fondant cake was the featured bride’s cake which was placed on a round table. White and blush roses were suspended over the cake in the main rotunda from mono filament and were accented with hanging votive candles.

The groom’s cake was a double-fudge chocolate cake, which also held truffles. The box-shaped cake was made to represent life being like a “box of chocolates.” Large, glass trumpet vases filed with hydrangeas, white spray roses, blush garden roses, willow branches and hanging crystals accented the rooms.

The Motown band, the Tip Tops of Mobile Alabama, entertained the guests with many selections. The bride Keleigh Kristen Elizabeth Beck and groom  Dean Russell Mertens were each serenaded by their sorority and fraternity, Alpha Chi Omega and Pi Kappa Alpha.

The couple was whisked away in a white horse-drawn carriage to their honeymoon destination of The Ritz Carlton Hotel on Canal. Guests attending were from Florida, Boston, Tennessee, North Dakota, Waco, Abilene, Dallas, Houston and Beeville.

Keleigh is a senior at the University of Houston, majoring in public relations and double minoring in marketing and history.

Russell is senior at the University of Houston, majoring in civil engineering with a major in math. He is currently interning with Shell Oil.

The couple will reside in Houston.
