Russell Mertens Specializes In All Types of Engineering

Dean Russell Mertens is an Engineer at Rilco Manufacturing Company, Inc., a US based company that develops a variety of pipe supports and components. Being a dedicated professional, he performs all types of job responsibilities of multiple facets of engineering. Russell primarily works in the research and development department but also helps with everyday tasks throughout the company.

As a product engineer, Russell Mertens assists in the development of new product designs. Currently, a hybrid material of high density polyurethane foam with multiple layers of aerogel insulation is being established to contribute to the support of cryogenic piping systems. Russell is the lead engineer in thermally and mechanically testing of these materials.

As an applications engineer, in 2012 Russell Mertens built a data acquisition unit. This unit connects to a computer using various equipment to collect test data. Whether it is temperature, load, or displacement readings, it is all collected simultaneously. Russell creates the testing procedures and parameters needed to retrieve the necessary information. Once the tests are completed, he compiles all the data and generates test reports. In the reports he details the test and presents the data along with some analyzed content. Russell is not just a sit-at-the-desk engineer; he also works ephemerally in the test laboratory.

As a structural engineer, Russell Mertens performs calculations to ensure the integrity of the supports. Frequently customers ask for unique products and Russell designs and tests these products. Calculations can only go so far and simulated testing is needed to guarantee the product will work successfully in the field. Customers often request calculations for the standardized supports and Russell has developed a program through Mathcad to transfer data from excel to quickly provide calculation documents for the client’s specifications.

Prior to working in Rilco Manufacturing Company, Inc., Russell Mertens worked at Hermann Park Conservancy as a Shell Oil Internship program. He was a GIS Technician and a Cost Estimating Intern from June 2011 to Jan 2012. He was hired initially for the summer only but his supervisors noticed he was a superb employee so they re-hired as part time while he went back to school. Russell also worked at Cobb, Fendley & Associates, Inc. as a Civil Engineering Intern from Dec 2009 to Jan 2010.

Besides being an accomplished professional, Russell is a great human being and believes in living life to the fullest. On his spare time, he likes to travel or play a variety of sports, really any sport; basketball, golf, wakeboarding, and snowboarding are among his favorites. He is also very close to his family and makes sure to take out time for them no matter how busy he is. His family loves him for the fact that in spite of being so busy at work, he never neglects his personal life. Russell is also a humanitarian and believes that the best way to eradicate social problems is to support causes. He supports many committees and NGOs that work for the welfare of the society. In 2014, he participated and organized in the ovarian cancer awareness 5k run.

Dean Russell Mertens is an ideal engineer for a small to medium sized company like Rilco Manufacturing. He can handle a gamut of responsibilities and collaborates with project managers, purchasing agents, and estimators to provide vital information in a timely manner necessary for the company to run proficiently. Russell strives to improve himself and others around him. He continues to push the limits of engineering and loves new challenges that have never been accomplished before.
